Dit is eers vanaf die laaste twee dekades van die negentiende en veral vanaf die twintigste eeu dat in Wes-Europa ’n studie gemaak is van die Christelike Latynse literatuur. Voorheen is dit as waardeloos geignoreeen aan ’n literêre ostrasisme onderwerp. Dit is te danke aan die filologie dat daar ’n kentering in hierdie standpunt gekom het.
