By navraag oor wat die aard van 'n inougurele rede moet wees, het ek tussen die uiteenlopende antwoorde gekies vir dié standpunt dat 'n inougurele rede moet poog om 'n perspektief te gee op die leerstoel wat beklee word, op so ’n wyse dat alle kollegas en belangstellendes kan begryp waarom dit gaan.
