In this paper an attempt is made to establish whether a link exists be tween on the one hand Afrikaner views and the entrenchment of white political power by means of inter alia the socio-political exclusion of other racial groups, and on the other hand the strengthening of security leg islation in the wake of increasing resistance to the policy of apartheid. A consequence of this dichotomy of the extension of apartheid and the need to strengthen security legislation has been the steady erosion of the rule of law and - in the view of many learned lawyers - a nearly irreparable encroachment on individuel liberties.
